The main thing here is that creating an eBook does no longer require expensive software or any advanced design skills. With free Google Documents, anyone can write, format, and even publish a professional eBook using just a laptop and internet connection.
Whether your interest is to sell your knowledge, grow your brand, build authority, or offer a free lead magnet, this simple guide will walk you through every step, from the simple idea to the finished eBook.

Step 1: To Create Ebook with Google Documents: You have to Decide the Purpose of Your eBook.
This is where many of us make mistakes. Please, before opening Google Docs, be clear about the reason you are creating the eBook.
You have to ask yourself: Is the book for selling, lead generation, gift or free value?
B. Then who is your target reader? And C. What problem will this eBook solve?
A clear and focused purpose helps you write faster and keeps the content valuable. Your readers love clarity. Write your eBook for one specific audience, not “everyone.”
Step 2: Then Outline the Content of the Ebook with Google Documents .
Do not just start your ebook. There is a need to outline the content of the ebook. Do not start writing blindly. A simple outline will save you a lot of time and keep your ideas highly organized.Your outline can look like this:
- Title page
- Copyright page
- Preface
- Forward
- Introduction
- Chapter 1
- Chapter 2
- Chapter 3 etc. then Conclusion
You can always add, create, or remove chapters later. The goal here is to create a clear flow from start to finish. Make the chapter topics simple and direct to the point.
Step 3: Open Google Documents and Set Up Your File.
Then Go to docs.google.com and click Blank Document. Immediately do these:
i.Rename your file (top-left corner). At the top left corner you will see a space, they wrote “Untitled” , tap on it and rename the document , maybe according to the name of the book you want to create.
- Check the notification bar, and choose the fonts you want to use. Use a clean font like Arial, Georgia, or Times New Roman. I prefer Times New Roman.
iii. Then set the font size. For the font size, you will see a small box immediately after the font by the right, where a number in a box is written. For the Headings use 18–24. Then for the Body text, use 11–12
This helps your eBook look professional from the start.
Step 4: Create a Simple eBook Structure. Structure for Ebook with Google Documents.
The structure is very important. Structure matters more than many people realize. To do this, check the option before the font , you will see “normal text”. Tap on it. Use Heading 1 for chapter titles. Heading 2 for sub-sections and Normal text for paragraphs
To apply headings, simply do the following:
i.Highlight the text first.
ii.Click that place you see “Normal text” , the box is called “Styles” in the toolbar
iii. Then choose the appropriate heading level. This makes your eBook easy to read and helps you when exporting to PDF.
Step 5: Write Your Content Naturally and Clearly.
Now comes the most important part which is writing. Try and write the way you speak. Use Short paragraphs, Simple sentences and Clear examples. Avoid trying to sound too academic. Real people connect with clear and honest writing.
Use one main idea per paragraph. Then break long sections into smaller parts and use bullet points where it is helpful and needed.
Step 6: Add Images if you want.
Images improve reader experience and make your eBook more engaging.You can add Illustrations, Screenshots and Quotes designs.
To add images: Click Insert → Image. Then Upload from your computer or Drive.
Make sure the images are relevant, not blurry and properly aligned.
Step 7a: Format Your eBook for a Professional Look.
Good formatting is good. It separates amateurs from professionals. Do the following:
i.Set the line spacing to 1.15 or 1.5. As you check the right corner, towards the tool bars, you see three dots, click on it and go to the second to the last option, you will see line and paragraph spacing. Choose 1.15 or 1.5.
- Then Use justified or left-aligned text. Shift the cursor to the last option. You will see “align and indent” you can choose the center or left aligned.
iii.Add page breaks between chapters and keep margins consistent. To add page breaks:
- Click Insert → Break → Page break.
This ensures each chapter starts on a new page.
Step 7b: Step by Step Formatting.
iv.Then starting from the first page, create a good front cover of the ebook.You can use canva to make the design. Hover over to canva.com. If you have not registered, try and register, then log with your email and password. Then search for book front cover templates. They will give you samples.
Edit the samples to the names and designs you want to use for your book. Download it later to the computer. Or for a more easiest way. Go to chatgpt.com and ask chatgpt to generate a front cover of your book with the colour background you want and name of the book.
Example “generate an image of a front cover of a book i book wrote about 20 secrets of top students, use an african reading in a library as a background, put the name of the book 20 Secrets of Top students to reduced font size fitting into the front cover, and my name Okeke ifunanya as the author at the end of the front cover’ make it sharp and neat” Once the image is generated, download it to your computer.
To add images: Click Insert → Image. Then Upload from your computer or Drive.
- In the second page, try and rewrite the Title Page, now in a plain and simple manner. Your title page should include: eBook title, Subtitle, then Your name or brand.
Then continue other pages as you planned through the table of your contents.
- Finally, create and upload the backcover, as you did in the front cover. Use the back cover towards the end of the book. It will bear about the book and about the author. Design it properly to contain both.
Step 9: Proofread and Edit Carefully.
Never skip this step.Read your eBook, Slowly, Out loud if possible and carefully. So, check for: Grammar errors, Spelling mistakes and repeated words. You can also use Tools → Spelling and Grammar in Google Docs to assist you.
Step 10: Convert Your Google Doc to PDF.
Most eBooks are shared as PDFs or epubs. So export the book as a pdf.
Therefore, to export: Click File → Download → PDF Document (.pdf). So, with this, Your eBook is now ready to: Sell, Share, Upload to your website or use Use as a free giveaway
Step 11: Upload and Share and Sell through Google drive or Blog.
Once your PDF is ready:Upload it to your WordPress Media Library if you have a website. Therefore, create a blog post explaining what the eBook offers. Then add a clear download or purchase button in the blog.
Or Upload it on your Google drive. Then in the web page or blog, write “download here” highlight the text → “Download here” you will see a link box at the tools bar of your blog, like the one here on google document, tap on it and insert the link. It will appear blue.
- If you don’t have a blog or website, simply upload it on your google drive. Click the share button of the google drive, or tap on the three dots beside the pdf. You will “send a copy” , tap on “send copy” , choose gmail from your phone and send it to the recipient who bought the book. Or you just tap the three dots, the tap ‘copy link” then send the ebook link to the whatsapp or email link of the buyer.
If it is just a word document you want to sell, click on the manage access you will “restricted” tap on ‘change” then tap on “restricted only people added can open” it will show you “Anyone with the link” tap on it , you will see “viewer” tap on it , you will see scroll down menu “viewer, commenter and editor” choose editor. This will allow them access to download the ebook.
Or click share then add the email address of the people who buy the book . Make sure you add them as editor, and notify them.
Notabene: If you have a blog or website.
For best results, write a short landing page explaining: Who the eBook is for, What problem it solves and Why it is worth downloading.
